How Calgary Marketing Changed Over the Last Decade

As we near the end of 2019, we’re looking back at how Calgary marketing has changed over the last decade!

All the way back in 2009, smartphones, social media and digital advertising were all in their infancy. Brands were marketing their new products through traditional means such as newspapers, television and magazines while the public was consuming media and advertisements through traditional channels.

Flashing forward to the end of 2019 we have seen technology make huge advances! Not only in the way we consume media and advertisements, but in the way we market new products. Let’s look at some of the biggest changes of the last decade:

Social Media:

Social media has been a major game-changer over the last decade. In 2009 social media was mostly used by millennials to connect with their friends, classmates and family! In 2019, 2.48 billion people use social networks worldwide. But it’s not just users that are getting in on the social networking action, brands are a major force on social media. Social media is an excellent way for businesses to increase their exposure and revenue. Brands becoming engaged online has led to another marketing phenomenon, influencer marketing!

Smartphones:

Smartphones have massively impacted the way we consume entertainment, conduct business and navigate through day to day life. In 2009, iPhones were a mere 2 years old, and Androids were just beginning to enter the marketplace.

In 2019, most people have a cell phone, and many have given up on their landlines entirely. Not only that, but a majority of digital searches begin on mobile devices with 40% of all online transactions taking place using a mobile device.

Big Data:

Big data has revolutionized the way that brands market their products. Data is being collected constantly from social media to apps and websites. But it’s not just about collecting the data, it’s about how you use it. Over the last decade, marketing agencies have been able to harness the power of data to optimize their marketing strategies. To name a few, data allows businesses to create remarketing campaigns, personalizes offers and shopping experiences and target desired audiences. Marketing is no longer a shot in the dark, agencies can offer personalized approaches that benefit both shoppers and businesses.

AI:

Ai is one industry that has seen major advancements over the last decade, and we can expect to see even more changes in the next 10 years. The start of the decade was marketed with the invention of the first digital assistant, Siri. In 2019, digital assistants have become a staple in day to day dealings with the continued success of Siri, Amazon Alexa and Googles Cortana. We look forward to seeing where AI will take society and marketing in the next decade!
